Back to Oils

I will soon be represented by an agent for my oil paintings. I will give you more info in the next few weeks. I have to have 62 oils by February 1st. I painted this one today in order to get back in the swing of things. This won't be one of the paintings since I didn't take this reference photo. Most of the paintings that will be for sale will be ones painted on location.

Homage To 66

In 1966, Mini Coopers took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the famed Monte Carlo Rallye. However the French did not want that to stand and wrongly disqualified the BMC team, putting a Frenchman on the winners stand. Even he refused the prize because of the injustice.

It's not historically accurate, as i do not believe that the cars were this close at any time during the race. It is a homage after all.

    Inspired By my Son

When I was painting the GT40 illustration, my son kept asking me questions about it. I told him that it was built to beat the pants off of Ferrari. At six, he thought that expression was funny. He then asked, "how about their underwear"? I told him, sometimes. He's been telling everyone that the GT40 beats the pants off of Ferrari. Well, I did this one for him. i'm not sure i'll finish it - it has some problems. I'm sure he'll like it though.

    Painter Demo

Did another process demo in painter.

First - start with a value study. Block in your shapes, considering your light source and your focal point. It is the apple in this image.

Next is the intitial color wash in digital watercolor (simple water brush). I like the digital watercolor because it allows me to paint from dark to light - and because it allows me to tint my value study.

Next,I dry the digital water and then use a custom airbrush to paint opaquely over the image. I push the highlights, color saturation, tints and shades at this stage - trying to keep the most saturated area in the middle values on the light side.

Adding more detail with the opaque mediums. A cool wash over the entire image in digital watercolor is then applied. This is done to unify the shadow areas. Next is to pull back the warm/light side by using digital watercolor set at white.

This could still be taken much farther. It's just a matter of detail now.

    Restoration Begins

I had a couple of hours this weeked to myself. Some people take long walks, some smoke, some listen to music; I relax by tinkering.

My new project - a 1959 Bugeye Sprite. I pulled off the chrome, pulled out the rest of the interior, off with the doors and began on the body. Next - the engine goes.
