Tree House Demo
Value study - The quick study is useful to set the composition and create atmospheric perspective (depth). This part of the painting only takes a few minutes. If it doesn't work, I haven't wasted a lot of time.
The color pass and some detail - During this stage I paint with a lot of texture. I also develop temperature of light, reenforcing warm sides and cool sides. This could use about another hour of detail if I was to take it to finish.

Quick Sketch
This was a very simple demo for my students to consider depth, value and atmospheric perspective. They were limited to 5 values to create a simple environment. Then they were encouraged to take it farther with the steps below.
Thinking about shape and value to create depth.
Considering the light side and dark side
Glazing color - temperature of light and shadow - warm side and cool side
Time for detail.
I didn't take this one any farther because it was just an exercise.

John Wayne Cover
Unfortunately this cover illustration was not chosen. I did this painting for Menagerie Creative for the Fox DVD boxed set. Fox went with something else. I'm kind of bummed that this one wasn't chosen because I really liked what Menagerie did with it.
