They met while studying English Literature at Cal State Fullerton, They became close friends and occasional collaborators; the trio have half-seriously referred to themselves as "steampunks" in contrast to the prevailing cyberpunk genre of the 1980s. Jeter coined the term Steampunk in 1987.

Tim, I really look forward to meeting you soon. I am the curator of the Steampunk Beginnings show at CSUF. I pitched the idea to the Gallery about 2 1/2 years ago.
